It's strength is its atmosphere, and the feeling that you are THE BATMAN. A cannibalistic monster already stalks the sewers, and Batman's mind is frequently violated by his worst nightmares. Who is leaving these clues? Does the deceased Amadeus still roam the halls. You uncover the secrets of the foundation of the asylum by Amadeus Arkham, and learn of his own tragic descent into madness.
It feels like a relic of a bygone era, a time of electroshock therapy and superstitious beliefs about mental health. The Asylum feels like a real place, cursed and haunted, and every time you turn a corner you half expect a ghost to be there, only to find a deranged lunatic that's escaped his cell. It's atmosphere is also expertly crafted. Your freedom is relatively limited compared to the sequels, but I would argue that it's strong focus on narrative and metroidvania level design strengthens it. It's the perfect batman game, and feels so much like an expansion of the mythos.
